Dumpster Sizes

How do you know which size to choose for a particular project? Should you just eyeball the amount of debris you have and work backwards from there? Or is it better to just go with your gut feeling and order the largest size available? The answer is a bit of everything. Many of our customers struggle with finding the right container for their projects, but in reality the process is no harder than choosing a car to rent or a bike to buy. They will all get you from point A to Point B; it’s just a matter of what you plan on doing with them.

If you are about to start demoing parts of your home, such as that kitchenette that the original contractor inexplicably decided was better than a full kitchen, then you will probably be in the market for a 20 yard dumpster. Most single-room makeovers generate a couple of tons worth of debris in the form of floorboards, studs, sheetrock, tiles, and old cabinetry.

Top Tips for Renting a Dumpster in Grand Rapids

  • Check the Rates: Not all dumpster rental services charge the same rates using the same pricing model. Some charge a customer for every ton of trash they dispose of, while others, such as Grand Rapids Waste, charge a flat rate up to a certain weight limit (generally 1-5 tons). Any additional weight is then prorated and added as an overage fee. This pricing model is usually preferable because it provides the customer with a fixed rate, rather than a variable rate, so they know ahead of time what the rental is going to cost.
  • Get the Sizes: Every company is going to offer different sizes. So you should always make sure they have the size you need before you go through with the rental. Even if you aren’t sure of the exact size you will need, it is always good to know what your other options are in case you need to swap out for a new one later on.
  • Dig for Fees: There are always some fees associated with waste hauling, but some companies throw in more with their invoices than others. You’ll want to know them all before you rent a dumpster. Grand Rapids Waste charges just three kinds of fees: overages, extensions, and trip fees. Overages only result from overfilling your dumpster, and extensions only from keeping your dumpster beyond the 10 day rental. Lastly, trip fees are only applied for failed deliveries due to blocked driveways or other delivery obstacles that we cannot account for.
  • Know the Terms: Familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of the dumpster rental service. Most haulers will include these in an invoice or receipt. If not, there should be a copy on their website or should be recited to you in a summary over the phone. You can find Grand Rapids Waste’s terms and conditions here.
